TREATMENT
Mole, skin tag & lesion removal
Non-surgical, medical procedure used to remove moles, skin tags, and other benign skin lesions.
At Sula Clinic, we remove unwanted skin lesions through the use of cautery. Lesion removal with cautery, also known as thermal cautery, is a common medical procedure used to remove various types of skin lesions. The process involves using heat to destroy or excise the skin lesion. Cautery can be used for removing skin lesions such as; benign moles, skin tags, seborrheic keratosis, and other benign growths.
The treatment involves a heated electrode applied to the lesion, generating enough heat to destroy the tissue. The heat causes the cells in the lesion to coagulate and denature, effectively removing or ablating the abnormal tissue. Different treatment methods using cautery include:
direct removal – the electrode is used to cut or vaporise the lesion directly.
desiccation – the electrode is used to dry out the lesion, causing it to fall off over time.
coagulation – heat is applied to stop bleeding if the lesion is vascular.
The advantages of cautery for lesion removal are:
precision, allowing for precise removal of the lesion with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue, meaning less risk of scarring.
efficiency, as the treatment is quick and can often be completed in a single visit.
control of bleeding as the heat from the cautery device helps to seal blood vessels, reducing the risk of bleeding during and after the procedure, and low risk of infection as the heat sterilises the area, lowering the chance of infection.
A thorough examination and consultation with our advanced nurse prescriber occurs in the first instance to determine suitability of the procedure for the specific type of lesion. Prior to treatment a local anaesthesia is administered, either topically or via injection, to numb the area around the lesion, ensuring you are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
Lesion removal with cautery is a versatile and effective method for treating a variety of skin lesions. By using heat to destroy or excise abnormal tissue, this procedure offers precise and efficient results with minimal downtime.

Wound care: the treated area must be regularly cleaned with a topical antimicrobial spray (Clinispet+ Skin) which will be given to you at the time of your appointment, to prevent infection. A bandage or dressing might be used to protect the area.
Healing: the treated area will form a scab, which usually falls off within a few days to a couple of weeks. It is important to keep the area clean and avoid picking at the scab to minimise scarring.
Follow-up: a follow-up appointment may be scheduled to monitor healing and ensure no complications arise.
